Another Step Closer to a Dog Run in Astoria

Happy 2018 Dog Owners!

After a long hiatus while waiting for the city’s procurement process* to be completed, ADOA has finally reconvened, elected a new board (please welcome Alexia Vullis to our executive committee!), and received updates regarding the status of our park. According to the Park’s Department Capital Project Tracker, a contract has been secured and construction is set to begin in April 2018 (with completion of the project in April 2019). In response, ADOA’s executive committee is increasing our meeting schedule and will begin strategic planning for the park’s future. We hope to have more information for the community soon. Thank you to all the dog owners in Astoria, and all of our supporters, for the patience while we wait for the park to finally be built. We know it has been a long wait, and we are just as excited to see this project completed as anyone!

Design for the Dog Run Release by the City

On August 5th, 2016, Councilmember Costa Constantinides’ office released the Parks Department’s plans for the new dog run in Astoria’s Triborough Playground C. These plans were approved by the Astoria Dog Owners Association earlier this summer during a private meeting with the park’s stakeholders.

The whimsical design includes all of our requested amenities, along with a blue/green color scheme and a large dog bone painted in the middle of the park.

Amenities will include:

  • Drinking water for dogs and people;
  • A double gated entry;
  • Separate small and large dog runs;
  • Sprinklers in the shape of fire hydrants for dogs to play in on hot days;
  • A storage locker for maintenance supplies;
  • Climbing rocks;
  • Improved grading to ensure water can adequately drain from the site;
  • Hose hookup(s) for cleaning purposes;
  • Clear site lines for dog parents to monitor their pups.

The funds allocated by our public officials will also go to renovating one of the basketball courts, as well as improving the sidewalks around the park. Water access will also be installed to the park, as the site currently is not hooked up to a city water source.

A tentative timeline for the project is as follows:

  • Bids Process: January 2017
  • Breaking Ground: Spring/Summer 2017
  • Park completion: 2018

Astoria Dog Owners Association will be planning a meeting in the near future to discuss plans moving forward; please look for the announcement on our Facebook page, as well as here on our blog.

On a more personal note:

The members of Astoria Dog Owners Association are incredibly excited to see two years of hard work paying off, and are extraordinarily grateful for the hard work, dedication, and support of our public officials. We are also unspeakably grateful to all the Astorians who have helped making the dreams of an official dog run a reality, the local businesses who have provided generous support to our participatory budgeting campaign, and of course everyone who went out and voted for ballot item 13 during the 2014-2015 participatory budgeting cycle.

We are honored to be a part of this amazing community!!!

Big Announcements- A press conference, a final budget, and more.

On Friday, September 25th, Astoria Dog Owners Association joined Council Member Costa Constantinides, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, State Senator Michael Gianaris, Parks Department representatives, Old Astoria Neighborhood Association, and the Astoria Park Alliance at a press conference (the press release can be found here), to officially announce that Astorians will be getting their very first dog run. We have been incredibly grateful for our public officials’ generous allocation of funds towards this initiative, and are proud of our community for pulling together and making sure our voices were heard.

With a budget of $1M (between the $500,000 allocated thanks to participatory budgeting and our Councilman, and an additional $500,000 from our Borough President and State Senator), we will certainly be able to build a state of the art dog run that Astorians can be proud of, and more importantly, feel safe bringing our dogs to. While the estimated cost sounds quite large, we have been told by our officials that issues such as water access will be expensive to resolve, and we trust their expertise on the matter of funding these projects.

The next steps will be for the city to begin the bidding and design phase, and then to receive community feedback. Astoria Dog Owners Association will be working closely with the city, especially during the feedback stage, to ensure the needs of our community are met by the approved design. We have been told the estimate for the opening of the park could be a couple of years out, but we will be keeping the community advised. Astoria Dog Owners Association is very excited to sit down with all parties involved and begin moving this project we have all fought so hard for forward.

About a year ago, our community met in a back room at a local beer garden to discuss a petition put together by our chairman Bill Peloquin. Today, we are finally on the verge of getting a dog run built here in Astoria. What a difference a year and a lot of hard work makes. And we wouldn’t be here without all of you.

Thank you everyone for helping make a difference!

You Voted… WE WON!

We are very excited to announce that we received the outcome of the Participatory Budgeting vote last night, and we have won the funding to build a dog run in Astoria! It has been a years long fight that we joined last year, and it is finally our time. Thank you to all of our campaign sponsors, to our supporters, and to those who got out and voted for Proposal 13. We wouldn’t have been able to make this happen without you.

Please forgive us while we take the time to update our webpage, and while we figure out what the next steps are in the process towards getting the run built. We will continue to keep you all posted as we get more information. You can find the latest updates on Facebook, as well as here on our blog (as we take the time to reorganize our webpage and publish the latest information).

And, thank you again. This is a reality because of all of your help!!!ThankYou

Basil is excited to hear she might get a new, safe, clean place to play (and get to keep her off leash hours too)! But she needs your help; please vote during the week of April 13th-19th on Participatory Budgeting Item #13.

We have finally launched our Instagram account! Check us out here. We promise lots of adorable pictures of our pups, along with important information about our campaign and how you can get involved!

In the coming days, we will be announcing more information about our campaign (including any campaign events/activities). The vote is less than a month away now, and we have a lot to do. We are hoping not to have to break any bad news to Basil (How can you say no park to a face like her’s?)!!!

We have some information on preliminary voting sites, which can be found here!!!

Let’s make 2015 the year that Astoria having a dog run becomes a reality!!

Updates from ADOA- Participatory Budgeting Campaign, and More

As we recently announced, our proposal for a new dog run in Triboro C has been approved and will be on the Participatory Budgeting ballot this year. In preparation, we will be campaigning in support of our initiative, in hopes of getting enough votes to have our project funded! We have a lot of work to do, since the voting period is only a month away. In preparation, we will be fundraising as well as working towards developing campaign strategies. We are looking for volunteers to help us get information about the voting process and our project our to Astorians in City Council District 22. Campaigning will take place leading up to voting in April (the 12th to the 18th), and the more people who can help, the better. A lot is riding on this vote; if we win, we receive the funding for our project. Since we already have Community Board 1’s approval, as well as broad community support, there is less red tape. We would be able to move forward with getting bids for the building of the park, and hopefully, building the park sooner than later. If we do not win the vote, we will have to find finding elsewhere.

In order to fund our campaign (including paying for fliers, t-shirts, bandanas for RaffleFlierour pups, etc.), we are also planning a raffle, with lots of fun prizes for us and our pups. Any leftover funds will go towards funding the run itself. If you are a local business owner, and interested in donating goods or services to our organization to raffle off, please contact us (you can email our chairman at billpeloquin@outlook.com or use our contact page to get in touch with us). It is a great way to help the community and an advertising opportunity for your business/organization.

You can download our raffle flier here: RaffleHandout.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday March 10th, at 7pm. As usual, the meeting will be held at Shore Towers Condominium. At this time, we will be discussing fundraising (including our raffle), our PB campaign, and other matters related to the building of a dog run. As always, our meetings are open to the public. All are welcome! If you are interested in volunteering to help with our campaign, please attend!

You can see event details and RSVP (not that we require it) here.

Minutes from our last meeting are available on our Meetings page.

You can also contact us for more information, or find us on Facebook (we manage a Page or you can join our Group).

Exciting Updates!!!!

We have some amazing news here at Astoria Dog Owners Association! We made the Participatory Budgeting Ballot!!! Voting will be held between April 12th and April 18th. Keep an eye out for more information about our campaign, and where the voting locations will be. You can learn more about our campaign here.

In regards to planning the campaign, we have our next meeting on Wednesday March 4th, at 7pm. It will be held, as usual, in the Shore Towers Conference Room. All are welcome (it is an open/public meeting). Attend to learn more or get involved! Our chairman will also be attending the latest Astoria Park Alliance meeting tonight at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden on 24th Avenue. There, he will be providing updates on our progress towards getting this new dog run built. It too is an open meeting, so feel free to check it out! Astoria Park Alliance has been a huge supporter of ours, and we are grateful for their invitation tonight.
